Gotham. The word used to bring about thoughts of a glorious, large city. It rivaled New York City in glamor, along with the amount of people that flocked to it's lights in dreams of becoming rich. Businesses boomed, the Arts thrived. The wealthiest people in the country left trails of couture and chic in the restaurants and high rises in which they spent their days. Philanthropy provided even the outer, rougher edges of the city with respect. But the city attracted more then just big-dreaming students and socialites. Mobs soon ravaged the streets, and it wasn't long after that a more hideous, dangerous class of criminals swept the city.
Doctors and Psychologists with dreams of journals and fame followed the crime into the city. Arkham Asylum exported documentations on a large range of disorders and diseases faster then they could import patients. Officers had ideas of grandiose and glory that cracking down on crack dealers couldn't feed. Corruption ran rampant behind- and in front of- the curtain.
The citizens clung to their Dark Knight in hopes of protection. But when his work was done, they rejected him in the classic style of the rich and spoiled.
But even with the cracks and creeks in Gotham's society and system, it thrived. But that's in the past.
December 19th, 2008 was the date in which Gotham fell into the Dark Ages. Earthquakes were improbable in the area. One hitting a 7.5 on the Richter scale was impossible.
Gotham was always the city for the impossible.
The city cracked and crumbled, destroying many buildings and damaging almost all the rest. Some lives were lost, most were ruined. Scientists began to spread ideas that Gotham could be hit again- and harder. The United States government ordered an evacuation of the entire city; those that remained were to be left to rot in a No Man's Land.
Resources were thin; the damage was extensive. Few were able to escape before the city was barricaded and blocked off from the rest of the world.
Crime may have had an influence, but now it positively rules. The Mayor was killed in the first month. Arkham Asylum clings to it's patients, but with few guards, those that are checked into the facility have short stays. The escape rate rises on a daily basis.
The city is now split between the Mob that's attempting to take hold with the little money they have left and brute force, the 'Villains' that Arkham keeps trying so desperately to hold, Cops of both the corrupt and virtuous nature, and the poor citizens who were unable to escape this torture. And there's one man who seems to be leading them all; The Joker.
Where is the Batman when his people need him? Gone for months leaving the city to fend for itself, with only his 'family' for protection. When he returns can they welcome him back?
It was once said that the night is darkest before the dawn, well welcome to Gotham's darkest hour; dawn doesn't seem to be coming any time soon.
Please note that the plot is loosely based off of the No Man's Land comics. Loosely. Unless stated above, following plots of those pieces is not intended.
