JOHN “JACK” NAPIER JR.
Nicknames: Joe Kerr, J, Mister J, The Clown Prince of Crime, The Chaplain of Chicanery, The Monstrous Montabank and an Agent of Chaos
Alias[es]: The Joker
Age: Believed to be between the ages of 28 and 34.
Physical Appearance:
A hunched posture and sinister scars make Napier a suspicious looking fellow indeed. His lack of personal hygiene is obvious, due to his greasy long hair and yellowing teeth. Comprised mainly of greasepaint, though has been known to use just about any substance he can get his hands on, Napier accentuates his grisly facial scarring with a bright, fire engine red clown smile, as well as highlighting his eyes with black circles. His characteristic face makeup is usually smudged and smeared, giving him a deranged look, which is mirrored in his actions. Due to this constant use of makeup, it has become ingrained into his skin and thus is very hard to get completely off. He defines himself by his facial scarring, often offering to tell others how he acquired them, though it is doubted that his stories are true. Nearly cut from ear to ear, the scars themselves are similar to that of a "Glasgow smile", though they are not clean cut and one side being more deep and longer than the other.
Often seen wearing his distinctive green and purple suit, his clothes are surprisingly well kept considering his personal habits. Prefers to keep his clothing custom, as it makes it harder to track down his true identity, as well as add mystery to himself. Another identifying feature of his is his voice and speech patterns. Often starting at a somewhat high and edgy pitch, Jack's voice fluctuates from loud to soft depending on the level of his excitement. When he is threatening, his voice drops down an octave to a lower, more grating pitch. Between this, he also talks rather rapidly, slowing down at times to enunciate and stress particular words, as well as his random giggling fits.
Distinguishing Marks:
His trademark scars take the shape of a mutilated Glasgow smile, which he accentuates with his characteristic clown-like makeup. Has both earlobes pierced once.
Played By: Heath Ledger
Strengths:
-manipulation: "It's all a matter of telling people what they want to hear...if it's in their favor, then they're all for it."
-outsmarting others: "It's not rocket science...it's just a matter of being ahead of the curve."
-stealth and disguise.: "Slather on some makeup, put on some new clothes...you're a whole different person. That's why the Batman wears a mask, you know."
Weaknesses:
-rationality: "I don't think about what I'm going to do next and why I'm going to do them...I just do things."
-Harley Quinn: "As long as she stays with me, she is a thorn in my side and a neon sign to my enemies. And we all know, I am a man with many enemies."
-impatience: "Waiting is sometimes the hardest thing to do, but eventually you have to wait for the police to catch up, because otherwise, they'll lose interest."
-pistachios and other nuts: "They make me feel funny. And not in the 'ha ha ha' way."
Personality Traits:
insane- There is no question as to whether or not Mr. Jack Napier is insane. The man lives in a world without rules and he does whatever he wants, whenever he wants, however he wants. Unlike most upstanding citizens, he is not limited by the basic morals of right and wrong and is often very rude to his victims, whether they be prostitutes or high class citizens. In fact it seems the only rule Napier plays by is how some people deserve to go. For instance, he believes the Batman deserves a much grander and classy death, than that of his henchmen, whom he will randomly shoot just because he "felt like it." Manipulative and murderous, Napier will not be stopped at anything to get what he wants. Napier has been known to laugh extensively in a disturbing manner when most would feel pain. He seems to enjoy pain and encourages others to bring it upon him. He has much evidence of extensive injury, and shrugs this off with his motto, "I believe whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you... stranger." In addition to his unusual attitude towards pain, Napier has very poor personal hygiene, which highlights his deranged mindset. Diagnosed a sociopath upon his arrest, Napier has lost any basis in reality that he has ever had. He sees the world as his plaything and is extremely creative in his ideas for chaos. In addition, Napier exhibits severe mood swings which can be triggered within a second, for hardly any reason at all. One second, he is perfectly happy and will offer to show you a magic trick or two, and the next, he is angered beyond control. When he is angry, he does not even attempt to control it, often hitting whatever is nearest to him. He is known to throw temper tantrums, much like those of a toddler, when he does not get his way. Thus, the Arkham doctors believe that he indeed has bi-polar tendencies.
genius- The man is no doubt a genius, yet he uses his genius to build an array of different explosives and outsmart the legal system of Gotham. Anything that could possibly create chaos, Napier can and will do it. Unpredictable, he has confused the GCPD numerous times ranging from full blown crimes, such as the kidnapping and murder of assistant DA, Rachel Dawes to the time-wasting, such as the defacing of numerous campaign posters when DA Harvey Dent ran. When caught by the legal system, Napier always manages to slip through their fingers, always one step ahead. Napier's total disregard for human life applies to himself as well, as he constantly puts his own life in danger, displaying some suicidal tendencies.
unfeeling- As for feelings, Napier lacks any empathy whatsoever. He has a great understanding of how to turn peoples feelings against them, but he himself does not understand basic human feelings in regard to others. The closest thing he has to love is his infatuation with the Batman, whom he revers, stating that he "completes him." Though he often expresses dislike in the Batman, and finds him ridiculous, he prefers that the Batman hunt him down as opposed to the police. As for the situation with Harleen Quinzel, it is doubted that he has any sort of emotion for her, other than lust. It is believed that the only reason he keeps her around is because she is still of use to him and once she becomes useless in his eyes, he will quickly discard her and move onto another plan.
Though certainly deranged and insane, Napier is no doubt a genius and criminal master-mind and clearly very dangerous.
Secret(s/)Motive(s):
-Make the Batman break his mortality rule: "The longer you let me run free, the more people will die, Batsy. Just get over with, put me out of my misery. C'mon, I know you want to."
-Figure out the Batman's true identity and reveal it to Gotham: "It's time people know who the real Batman is."
-Get Harleen Quinzel under his spell: "Little Harley Quinn, so sweet and naive. She might just be my 'get out of jail free card'."
Family Members: John and Ethel Napier, deceased
Partners: Harleen “Harley Quinn” Quinzel
History: A Gotham native, young Jack Napier was born as a mistake to John and Ethel Napier. The Napier's were a tumultuous family indeed. John Napier was a retired naval seaman, and an alcoholic. Ethel Napier struggled to maintain a day job as a dental hygienist as well as support her young son and husband. Unfortunately, with John's drinking habits, money was tight for the family and the Napier's were forced to raise their son in the deteriorating sector of Gotham City known as the Narrows. John Napier, however, was not very happy with the arrival of his son, as he felt that it detracted his wife's attention from him, often complaining that she spent too much time with the young boy than with him. As a result, John was often very cold to young Jack, and when intoxicated, often vented his frustrations upon his son through his fists. Ethel didn't like this, but she was powerless against him during his drunken rages, and was often forced to watch, fearing that his anger would turn to her instead.
One night, Ethel had had enough and took her own life. John was outraged at the loss of his loved one and pointed the finger to Jack, who was ten at the time. Plagued with guilt, Jack began withdrawing from his classmates, instead brooding to himself and within a year, had become a total loner at school. With the loss of Ethel, John found himself stuck with a pre-teen son and began hitting the sauce even heavier than before, often driving the young boy out of the house with his drunken outrages and abusive pummeling. Bottling up his rage, Jack continued to excel in his classes, hoping to get a full-ride scholarship and escape from his father forever. High school began, and Jack found himself the target of bullying, as he had learned from his dealings with his father that if he gave in, people would eventually get bored and stop punching him. With his often frumpy, worn looks, wiry build, and his unkempt long hair, he was seen as a "pansy". From here, the first hints of his psychopathic nature were seen, as he began to get more and more aggressive as his bottled emotions built up. However, Napier managed to get through high school and graduated quite high in his class, as well as various scholarships to Gotham's local university.
Majoring in mechanical engineering, Jack's life was going fairly well in college. Away from his father, Jack was able to channel much of his emotion into a more positive relationship with a girl he very much fancied. However, he soon became very possessive and dependent upon the girl. She was his life and when he was without her, he was often very unstable. When she turned down his proposal of marriage, he was angered, leading to their breakup. This was a turning point in Jack's life, as it was the first time he let the Joker mindset take over, though there was evidence that his mental sickness had been present before. His friends had noticed some changes in Jack's attitude, especially in his speech patterns and personal hygiene and worried, convinced him to seek psychiatric help. However, Jack was not one to stick with anything, and soon dropped out of college due to stress.
Returning back home, his father took advantage of the situation to point out that his son had failed once again. Jack, however, was sick and tired of being pushed around and decided to defend himself. His father, although drunk, was still much stronger than the skinny Jack, and forced him down, gesturing wildly at him with a knife. At this point, Jack made the mistake of angering him, prompting his father to go off the deep end, which resulted in one side of his trademark grin. Leaving Jack for dead, his father ran off into the night, disappearing from Jack's life for quite some time. Although Jack's face healed over time, but his mental stability was broken ever since that night. Desperate for money, Jack fell in deep with a gang of drug dealers, earning himself the other side of his lopsided Glasgow smile. ("I'm going to finish what should have been finished long ago," said the drug dealer. Needless to say, he was sporting a nice smile and a slit throat several years later.) By this time, Jack's mentality had been devoured by the Joker and he lay dormant, watching as Jonathan Crane released a fear toxin upon the city of Gotham, and the Batman rising to the occasion. From the moment Jack set eyes on the Batman, the masked vigilante intrigued him, and ever since he has dedicated himself to the cause of tearing the dark knight of Gotham down to his level. Of course, before he could fully take on his role of the Joker, he had some business to take care of.
First order of business was to repay his dearest father for what he had become. Tracking down John Napier had been no easy task, but with his mob connections, Jack finally found his old man, who had been living in "hut-housing" residence. Entering the room in his full makeup, Jack Napier marked his full transformation by erasing the last tie to his former self. Cutting his father a smile just like he had given Jack, the Joker turned his back on his alter ego and burned down the entire residence. Though this sparked some interest in the police, they had no idea as to what this new supervillian was capable of doing.

Roleplay example:
The Joker was in a bad mood, which was never good news for his henchmen. When the Joker was in a bad mood, people had a nasty habit of dying. Of course, people died even when he was in a good mood, so it wasn't much of a trade off. However, the clowns that had hung around long enough knew that something had gone terribly wrong when the boss had come back to the warehouse hideout alone. After the Joker had stumbled home late last night drenched in blood, the veteran clowns knew well enough to stay their distance from the clown prince himself. The tension was so thick that it was nearly smothering the room's occupants as the Joker emerged from his private quarters, nursing his right arm. With his makeup almost completely gone, he looked more demonic than usual. His tongue snaked out to trace the scars Gotham had grown to fear as he scanned the room's occupants, then busied himself with sharpening some knives.
A new recruit made the mistake of making eye contact with the deranged clown and all the other henchmen winced as the idiotic boy dared to make conversation with the brooding boss. "Hey boss, whadda we do now?" The words echoed off the walls of the warehouse, lingering as all eyes turned to the new recruit, who returned the stares with a blank look of confusion, arms hung loosely at his sides. A hush fell over the entire hideout and the veterans looked up from their poker game to watch.
The Joker's fingers tightened on the hilt of the knife then loosened, as a sadistic grin spread across his scarred visage. "Well, well, well...who might we have here?" he drawled, crossing the room and gesturing at the boy with his knife. The recruit, realizing his mistake tried to back away from the advancing clown, but found himself glued to the spot by the Joker's intense stare. "Brian, is it?" the Joker asked, circling the boy now. The recruit swallowed, nodding slightly, his lip trembling. A snigger came from the poker table as the players returned to their game. There was no question in the matter: the boy was a goner.
"Brian, dear," the Joker cooed, stepping forward to caress the boy's cheek with the blunt edge of the knife. "Brian, what was the first thing I told you when you agreed to work with me," he asked, his voice going dangerously quiet. He paused and nodded at the boy, then grabbed the back of the boy's head, forcing the blade up to the boy's mouth. Not waiting for the terrified recruit's answer, the Joker replied, "Never. Question. My. Authority," leaning closer to the boy's face with each word. He smiled widely, revealing his yellowing teeth. He stepped back a tad, slipping the blade of the knife into the boy's mouth. "Brian, Brian, Brian," he sang, "What am I going to do with you...you know I don't like when people question me...it's not very, uh...respectful" He looked up at the ceiling, tracing his scars again and the recruit trembled under him, bringing the Joker's attention back to the boy he was clutching. "Sh, sh, sh," he whispered, leaning in towards the boy's ear. "You wanna know how...how I got these, uh...scars?"
The recruit's eyes went wide with fear, as he had heard horror stories about others that he had told his scar stories to and knew that they usually didn't survive. "You know, I used to think I had it bad...misunderstood, abused, and neglected...so I get some cable...because that's all I could afford and I make a noose cause it's all just too much for me...and I put it around my neck and jump off a bridge," the Joker paused, giggling uncontrollably. "Well something goes terribly wrong and the noose, uh, slips and starts tightening around my face and leaves me with these." He smiled, showing off his scars to the recruit. "Now, I'm always smiling. I'm the most happiest guy on Earth...Brian, Brian, Brian...you're too serious. You need to....to smile a bit more...and I'm going to show you how."
The boy gasped as the Joker started cackling uncontrollably, his laughter echoing through the warehouse.
